Jessica Rothe as Tree is still an appealing presence. But the film is overstuffed with unfunny self-parodying gore slapstick, half-felt sentimentality and semi-meta sci-fi...

It is instead that rarity - a sequel that is both better than the original and manages to retroactively improve that movie.

Those seeking horror will be frustrated with its wacky, nerdy slant, ensuring this film will irritate both those in search of scares and those bookish enough to appreciate a smarter sci-fi thriller.

I wish it had been a tighter film... but so much of the charm is in Jessica Rothe.

Rothe mugs and emotes for all she's worth, which is something, but her effort only highlights the desultory character of everything around her.
